About the restaurant

The sky-high restaurant was opened by Portuguese chef Claudio Cardoso at the top of the Heron Tower (now known as the Salesforce Tower) in a prime location in the middle of the City of London. The group now operates another restaurant in Covent Garden as well as sites in Las Vegas, Miami, Amsterdam and New York.

Sushisamba makes full use of its location, with panoramic windows that provide views out over the whole of London. It’s an ever-popular date spot for City workers and tourists alike, with an atmosphere that’s half-restaurant, half-party. It’s a floor apart from the Duck & Waffle, with which it shares a bar, and the views from the lift up to the 38th floor are as iconic as those from the dining room.

Sushisamba’s mix of influences might sound random, but a big population of Japanese immigrants in both Peru and Brazil means a restaurant that combines the cuisines of these countries makes total sense. The menu offers high-end sushi, Kobe beef, churrasco and ceviche, with dishes bursting with colour and flavour. Meals here aren’t cheap (a Kobe sirloin will set you back £165) but are always memorable.

Time Out

Japan, Brazil and Peru come together in this expensive New York import on floors 38 and 39 of Heron Tower: great views, great decor, wonderful sushi.

Standard

Eating at Sushisamba brought to mind the sport of Extreme Ironing. Both involve doing something mundane at an unusual height.

The Nudge

Perched atop the City’s Heron Tower (just below Duck & Waffle), it’s straddled by two outdoor terraces, one of which has a cocktail bar centred around a full-size orange tree.
