Originally opened as The Manor, Robin and Sarah Gill’s second restaurant followed the hugely successful The Dairy in Clapham Common (now relocated to Bermondsey), which itself was followed by Counter Culture, an intimate counter-dining experience and deli next door. The Manor was later renamed Sorella and has been popular with locals and visitors from further afield ever since.
Sorella’s interior is airy and with a relaxed feel, helped by the exposed brick, draped plants and colourful crockery. As with The Dairy, it promises ‘bistronomy’-style dining, rooted in classical cooking but with an unfussy style of service and ambience.
The menu here has a distinctly Italian character when compared to Gill’s other venues. House-cured Italian-style charcuterie – think coppa and bresaola made with high-welfare British meat – and bread are part of an antipasti section. Plates of pastas are offered as starters in Italian style, with grilled fish, meat and game making up a selection of larger secondi piatti.
Sorella is fine for locals after an elegant Italian, but it’s no longer a destination.
A little corner of the Amalfi coast can now be found down a Clapham backstreet, and it’s proving to be wildly popular
The menu adheres to the conventional Italian four-course structure but more compellingly the authentic Italian passion for pristine produce that is shared by head chef Dean Parker instrumental in agriculture and beekeeping in the restaurants’ investment in a Sussex farm.
The small stuff, in true Italian style, begins with the cichetti; you can expect small bites including fat, dark green fried Nocellara olives, or some risotto-loaded truffle arancini.
