About the restaurant

While the Quality Chop House has been in business in one form or another for 150 years or more, its sister restaurant Quality Wines was only opened next door in 2018. It continues the theme of approachable, classic British and European cooking in a cosy space, with many bottles available to take away.

The restaurant is operated by the Woodhead restaurant group, who also own Portland and Clipstone in addition to the Quality Chop House. The opening menus were devised by Quality Chop House’s head chef Shaun Searley. These days, Nick Bramham runs the kitchen. The latter has also gone on to open Arrosto more recently, an offering built around roast chicken and opened in the lockdown of 2020.

Dishes here are fairly eclectic – you’re just as likely to find roast partridge as a risotto, or the classic Basque pintxo of gilda (an anchovy with a pickled chilli on a cocktail stick). They’re largely devised to complement an incredible list of more than 250 wines, which change regularly and are sourced painstakingly from largely independent producers.

The Infatuation

Quality Chop House is an excellent restaurant in Clerkenwell that’s very talented at doing what it does best, classic British food. But its younger sibling - and next-door neighbour - Quality Wines manages to be an excellent lunchtime cafe, nighttime restaurant, and wine bar all rolled into one.
