Lurra comes from the team behind pintxos bar Donostía just opposite. Its menu is inspired by acclaimed restaurants in the city of San Sebastián and elsewhere in the Basque Country, including Michelin-starred grill restaurant Etxebarri and Bar Nestor.
Standout menu items at Lurra include incredibly flavourful and long-aged steaks from Galician ex-dairy cattle and whole grilled octopus, both cooked on the restaurant’s wood-fired grill. There’s also a great range of txakoli, a lightly sparkling wine characteristic of the Basque region.
The beautifully designed restaurant space is split into a compact dining room set over two floors, an outdoor courtyard and a private dining space, while the counter seating that surrounds the restaurant’s open kitchen is always a popular choice if you’re looking to get up close to the action.
Imagine a restaurant that’s as pretty and graceful as Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and serves food that hits you like a roundhouse kick delivered by Jason Statham. Welcome to Lurra, a Spanish Basque restaurant in Marylebone. And your dream threesome.
It’s easy to linger: the restaurant itself is lovely, all pale wood and marble, a refreshing departure from today’s ubiquitous bare brick and tin ceilings.
I visited Lurra in perfect Seymour Place conditions: the final burst of summer; diners and drinkers milling about the various bistros after dusk. Smokers, flirters, al fresco diners
With such an excellent Spanish restaurant on my doorstep, it might be a while before I traipse around the playas looking for a diamond in the fry-up rough again
Small plates hit the table almost as soon as we've ordered. Prawn croquetas, wafer-crisp panko-crusted parcels of bisque-heavy bechamel loaded with tiny, sweet shrimp
Seymour Place fits neatly into its latest Basque - the second venture from the team behind Donostia, just down the road.
