About the restaurant

A few doors down Bermondsey Street from his Spanish restaurant Pizarro, José Pizarro’s unfussy José is a classic Spanish bolthole, where diners sit and stand in a small dining room to graze on exquisitely prepared tapas dishes among the constant hubbub of conversation.

A longstanding relationship with iconic Ibérico pork producer Cinco Jotas means you’ll find some of the finest jamón in the business at José as well as the vaunted Presa Ibérica fillet, cooked rare and full of flavour.

Pizarro is more a steward of authentic tapas than someone trying to reinvent the wheel, and menus across his two Bermondsey restaurants and José Pizarro in Broadgate Circle tend to consist of classic dishes inspired by his native Andalusia as well as the Basque Country, Seville and other regions.

The Infatuation

Most tapas bars in London are actually just Spanish-themed restaurants serving small plates, but Jose is the closest you’ll get to an actual tapas bar.

Time Out

The decor is plain brick, timbers and tiles; seating is mostly on stools, with barrels to stand glasses on; and there’s a no-bookings, doors-wide-open attitude, albeit while being firmly planted in trendified Bermondsey.

The Guardian

Another positive thing about José is the chalked-up list of daily specials. We tried a few of these, with an emphasis on things cooked on the plancha, the flat grill that nobody on earth puts to use as well as the Spanish.
