About the restaurant

With a history reaching back into the 1890s, the original J Sheekey is a true London institution, set up by market trader Josef Sheekey out of a seafood stall at the original Covent Garden market. The Atlantic Bar was set up in 2008 as a companion to its older sibling next door.

Menus here, as you’d expect, revolve around fresh fish and seafood, brought from the UK’s port towns to Billingsgate Market each day. Fresh oysters are sumptuous (the restaurant used to be called J Sheekey Oyster Bar) while the star of the show, like next door, is the old-school fish pie, served piping hot in a ramekin for one and covered in creamy mash.

Like the original, the vibe is old-school British brasserie, and the restaurant is immediately noticeable by its bright red exterior and lively terrace. Given its proximity to theatreland, it remains one of the best restaurants in the area for a pre-theatre dinner in the early evening.

The Infatuation

Sheekey’s does excellent, magical things with shellfish - like not messing it up, basically. Whether you go for prawns or oysters (or both, because you’re a champ), this is how you should start a meal here.

Time Out

The atmosphere is relaxed, but smart enough for a snazzy date. It’s no longer ‘all about the counter’ (there are lots of tables now, too) and though the stained-glass windows are long gone, there’s still a vintage, jazz-age vibe

Standard

The Atlantic Bar with its own terrace is ideal for post-theatre eating in terms of location, hours kept and the composition of the menu, which can deliver delicacy and lightness if that is what is required, or fish pie.

The Nudge

Fronted by a vibrant turquoise dining terrace, the interior maintains just the right level of continuity from the more formal, original restaurant next door.
