About the restaurant

One of a handful of flagship restaurants in the multi-million-pound Coal Drops Yard destination near King’s Cross, Coal Office is a collaboration between celebrated Israeli chef Assaf Granit and designer Tom Dixon. Granit also runs Machneyuda in Jerusalem, the Michelin-starred Shabour in Paris, and is co-owner of London’s Palomar group.

In keeping with Granit’s other restaurants, food here revolves around the flavours and textures of Israel and the Levant, with a contemporary outlook and the odd touch of fusion, as in the ‘bruschetta’ with lamb sweetbreads, or the Machneyuda-style polenta.

With cutting-edge design by Tom Dixon, who has also collaborated on restaurants with Stevie Parle, among others, the restaurant is thoroughly contemporary in its look and feel, although it does so without sacrificing on comfort or conviviality.

Time Out

Can’t choose between The Palomar and The Barbary? Now you don’t have to. This King’s Cross newbie comes from the same crew – who also run eateries in Paris, Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, including hotspot Machneyuda

Standard

Coal Office Restaurant is a collaboration with chef/entrepreneur Assaf Granit (in the open kitchen on my second visit), who in London also co-owns with siblings Zoë and Layo Paskin The Palomar, which I never quite got, and The Barbary, which I never got into.

The Nudge

That space is, believe it or not, typically Tom Dixoney with millimetre-perfect exposed fittings sitting alongside gleaming translucent silver lampshades polished so finely they almost look liquid. And as a bonus? All of the tableware is available to buy from the attached Tom Dixon shop.
