About the restaurant

Chef-patron Tomos Parry worked at restaurants including Kitty Fisher’s before he opened Brat above Smoking Goat in Shoreditch in 2018. He’s since gone on to turn a residency at Climpson’s Arch in Hackney – where he worked before Kitty Fishers – into a second site for the restaurant.

In food terms, Parry is influenced both by the food of his native Wales with the wood-fired grilling culture of the Basque Country. A whole grilled turbot, the nickname for which lends the restaurant its name, is always a standout, as is the anchovy flatbread, and a beautiful aged Galician steak, with a beautiful and flavourful fat cap, is also delicious. Ask the waiting staff to select your wines if you’re stuck for ideas, or try the wine of the month, usually an interesting pour from a small producer.

The Shoreditch restaurant won a Michelin star in 2019, but despite that, there’s no hushed atmosphere or white tablecloths. The atmosphere is vibrant, and music and chatter fill the room, while the food made for sharing keeps things sociable and fun.

The Infatuation

Despite the feeling of contrived cool that comes with every restaurant in Shoreditch, here there’s nothing showy-offy. And you have to say fair play to them for that. Because Brat is actually very cool.

The Guardian

There’s a glossy kind of over-engineered food television which, whatever its other virtues, provides a brilliant workout for my throwing arm. It’s the cooking demo stuff, narrated by a restaurant chef who insists upon peppering every stage of the process with the word “simply”.

Standard

The chap in charge is Welsh chef Tomos Parry whose previous post was at Kitty Fisher’s. In the meantime he has been travelling and researching in the Spanish Basque country

The Telegraph

Brat is news, or what passes for news round here: a long-awaited and often-rumoured new project by fancied chef Tomos Parry, previously of Kitty Fisher’s in Mayfair.

Time Out

The first solo restaurant from award-winning chef Tomos Parry

The Nudge

It’s named in honour of the turbot (“the best fish in the world”), and it’s the debut restaurant from former Kitty Fisher’s head chef Tomos Parry.
