You can expect a laid-back style of food and service here, with a daily changing menu that’s evocative of restaurants like Rochelle Canteen and Morito, foregrounding seasonal and local ingredients and designed for the table to share.
The cosy restaurant is at one end of Maltby Street Market and Ropewalk, a hub of some great bars and food businesses including Bar Tozino and Little Bird Gin Bar, and a stone’s throw from the taprooms of the Bermondsey Beer Mile. A weekend market also sees some incredible street-food traders.
40 Maltby Street is the restaurant arm of Gergovie Wines, an importer that works closely with partner producers around Europe. They showcase some amazing natural and low-intervention wines and sell to restaurants and venues around the city. This results in a wine list that features some of the most exciting natural wines to be found in London, with many available to take away.
40 Maltby Street is easily (and seemingly effortlessly), one of London’s most consistently lovely wine bars and restaurants
The food that issues from the postage-stamp-sized kitchen is all pretty much faultless: not a beat is missed
Unassuming but charming, this small restaurant is a microcosm of London culture.
