About the restaurant

Couple Sam and Sam Clark (they, unbelievably, had the same full name before they married) were quiet leaders of the small-plate revolution in London. They set up their restaurants Moro and Morito to serve elegant sharing plates that brought quality ingredients to the fore. The two now operate Casa Moro in Hackney Wick as well as the aforementioned two.

Morito has long been known as a casual, easygoing lunch and dinner spot, with a cosy, comfortable interior and friendly service. It’s a great location for a date or a catch-up with a close friend, and will serve you as well for wine and snacks as an all-out meal.

In Spanish, “Moro” means Moorish, and food at the Clarks’ restaurants is heavily inspired by the Moorish influence on the food of the Mediterranean. That means spiced lamb kebabs alongside classic tapas dishes and simple preparations of in-season British vegetables, too.

The Infatuation

The cava’s on tap and the short list of cocktails is great, and while the brunch here is a nice change from the usual heavy rotation of avo toast places, be prepared for a two hour turnaround and a wait if you show up closer to midday.

Time Out

An effortlessly cool, Spanish/Moorish hideaway with gorgeous 1970s styling, a binding orange bar and a line-up of quickfire aromatic tapas.

The Nudge

The minimal, bright space is dominated by a huge horseshoe bar with a beautiful blue marble countertop, and it’s all sandwiched by a polished concrete floor & ceiling.

Standard

For someone who loves Greece (e g, me) this Cretan bias to the menu at Morita in Hackney is as seductive and stirring as a Psarantonis melody.
